On march 13 2019 the Denver metro area experienced an extreme weather event a bomb cyclone that resulted in ice and winds of up to 80 miles per hour approximately 200 000 people were left without power throughout various periods of the day and thousands of motorists were stranded that's where E470 stepped in not only did E470 keep the road open and become a housing shelter for stranded motorists but also used this experience to test the effectiveness of its newly implemented proactive traffic management program E470's successful response to Denver's bomb cyclone was made possible because of the planning and preparation of E470's entire Traffic Management Center the incident management operation related to this storm was designed to increase the safety of the roadway while increasing customer satisfaction by reducing incident clearance times and providing roadside services to all customers prior to the extreme weather in march 2019 E470 implemented a complete re-approach to training within the Traffic Management Center all new operators attend a six-week training program to ensure motorists and first responders receive all information needed to guarantee safe passage on the roadway and support effective incident and quick clearance procedures as a result overall average incident clearance times dropped from two hours for all events to just over one hour in 2019 out of the 292 crashes in 2019 E470s Roadside Assistance team assisted with traffic control on 278 of those crashes the TMC agents assisted with all 292. this action allowed the E470 TMC team to respond to a 60 increase of incident related calls during Denver's bomb cyclone including 52 Roadside Assistance customer stops and housing 58 motorists who were brought to E470's headquarters for temporary or overnight shelter E470 Roadside Assistance is a free service to customers that provides roadway help to stranded motorists E470 budgets for these free services offered 24 hours a day seven days a week on an annual basis with no sponsorship money used free services include changing flat tires providing gasoline or diesel jump starting batteries and support during inclement weather in 2019 the operation increased to eight patrol trucks and helps more than eleven thousand motorists traveling on the 47-mile tollway through collaboration of our Traffic Management Center and Roadside Assistance staff we're able to ensure that those choosing to travel E470 can do so with ease with safety and without fear of being broken down along the roadway this was never more evident than the response of our teams to customers that found themselves buried in the deep snows during the bomb cyclone of last year customers choosing to travel E470 can expect safety and convenience and service if they ever are stranded along the roadway and we think that is again a way we are able to improve the journey for the E470 customers
